The Choice for Tracked Equipment
Many projects that require construction mats also require tracked vehicles and equipment onsite. So, it’s important to remember, if you plan to drive tracks over your mats, which mats are capable of handling them.
CLT and laminated wood mats aren’t strong enough to withstand the stress of tracked vehicles and often break and splinter fairly quickly. If wood is your preference, you’ll need mats at least 8 inches thick beneath your tracks. Eight-inch thick mats are commonly referred to as timber mats, while 12-inch mats are usually called crane mats.
Any kind of wood mat runs the risk of splintering, no matter how thick. So, the safest option to use beneath tracked equipment – and in most situations in general – is composite mats. The dense polyethylene plastic is extremely durable and can be driven over continuously with minimal wear and tear.
